Apologia Educational Ministries was founded in 1994 in response to some local homeschooler's request for science curriculum. As a result, Dr. Jay L. Wile wrote a chemistry course for them, one section at a time. This course was a college preparatory Chemistry course based on the lecture notes that Dr. Wile used for his University students. At that time Dr. Wile's only expectation was to assist some local homeschooling families in preparing their students for college science courses.
Since that time, Apologia has grown into a family-owned corporation that, with the help of a few selected authors and Dr. Wile himself, writes and publishes creation-based science curriculum for grades K-12. We now have a large customer base that spans the United States and Canada, as well as many other countries. Our goal is to demonstrate to homeschooling parents that it is possible to homeschool your children in the sciences, using strong Christian, Creation-based curriculum that will put them a step ahead academically, even if it is not your thing.
The following list of people are speakers and/or authors for the Apologia family. You can call our office to request anyone for keynote and workshop sessions at your state homeschool convention.
Davis & Rachael Carman
Davis and Rachael Carman have been happily married since 1986. Their seven children range in age from 5 to 18—with two boys on one end, two boys on the other, and three girls tucked safely in the middle. The Carman family has been enjoying the adventures of the homeschool lifestyle since 1996 when God "got their attention."
Davis graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in Mechanical Engineering. He continued his education at Purdue University where he received his Master of Science degree. His career began in Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked for a large contractor in the research and development of military aircraft. That's where he met and later married Rachael.
Rachael graduated from Texas Women's University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in English and History. Prior to motherhood, Rachael taught at public high schools in Texas and Ohio. She is certified with C.L.A.S.S. (Christian Leaders, Authors and Speakers Seminars), and I.C.G.S. (International Council on Gender Studies).
A company relocation moved the Carmans to the Charlotte, North Carolina, area in 1993.
At the time the Carmans had two very young sons. When Charles reached kindergarten age in 1996, Rachael and Davis committed his schooling to the Lord, praying earnestly for his kindergarten teacher. After the initial teacher-parent meeting, Davis remembers telling Rachael he wasn't convinced that this was who they were praying for. When Charles' school career began with two weeks of wrong school bus assignments and overall negative observations, Davis and Rachael knew they had to make some drastic changes. Davis vividly remembers withdrawing Charles from school on a Friday having no clue what school would look like come Monday.
During the course of the weekend, Davis mentioned the possibility of homeschooling to Rachael, who had just given birth to their third child. Rachael felt her world crashing in. Davis reminded her, "We've been praying for Charles' teacher all along, and I think we've been praying for you." Thus the Carmans, who had intentionally resisted the idea of home education for several years, reluctantly began their homeschooling journey.
Their first year of homeschooling was rocky, but ended with hope as they attended the North Carolina annual homeschool convention in Winston-Salem. The speakers at the convention painted a picture of homeschooling that was inspiring and vision-expanding. Davis remembers, "Rachael and I talked the whole way home about how homeschooling could revolutionize our family and parenting. It gave us the energy to go a second year." The next year was much improved compared to the first. By year three the Carmans had an educational philosophy written; and by year four, they weren't looking back even with the unknown territory of high school lurking in the future.
Rachael and Davis started RDC Ministries in 2000 a ministry dedicated to affirming, encouraging, challenging, and inspiring homeschool families. They started Real Refreshment Retreats for homeschool mothers in 2003 as part of their outreach.
When Davis, the general manager of a manufacturing company, found his position eliminated in a 2006 company reorganization, he seized the opportunity to move into a ministry-oriented business.
Davis called Dr. Jay Wile in September 2006 to see if he would entertain an offer to buy Apologia. After a letter of intent was signed, Davis began talking to lenders to obtain the capital to finance the purchase. What should have been a straight-forward process turned into a roller coaster ride as the Christian worldview of the creation science curricula came into question. Over the course of twenty-one months, the Carmans persevered through unemployment, religious discrimination, and other setbacks until the sale was completed in June 2008. That is definitely the short version of the story! Go to https://apologia.securesites.net/news.php to read more in-depth articles on this subject.
Davis has served on the Board of Directors for North Carolinians for Home Education since 2002. His present position is Administrative Vice President. He is also the North Carolina Ambassador for the Home School Foundation (www.homeschoolfoundation.org), which is a ministry dedicated to helping homeschool families in time of need.
Rachael is the author ofSoundBites from Heaven – What God Wants You to Hear When You Talk to Your Kids. The book is a Focus on the Family Resource originally published by Tyndale. This book is available through Apologia.
Davis and Rachael have been speakers at retreats, seminars, and conferences across the USA. A Christian radio station manager said this about Davis and Rachael: "They have the unique ability of turning their personal experiences with homeschooling into encouraging lessons for all of us... and they are lessons that transcend homeschooling. They are about a life devoted to The Truth. God has used them to uplift, refocus, and teach many people."
Rachael is the author of the following book published by Focus on the Family and offered by Apologia.

Jay Wile
Jay Wile learned about his love for chemistry when his dedicated parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! Although he loved chemistry, he also had many other interests. For a while, he thought about becoming a concert pianist, but unfortunately, his fingers were not long enough (no kidding!). As he was finishing up his high school years, he became extremely interested in the theater and began to pursue a career in acting. Partly because he learned the science behind some of the special effects of the plays in which he performed, he eventually went back to his first love: chemistry.
He went to the University of Rochester in upstate New York to study chemistry, and while he was there, he began working on nuclear chemistry experiments. He became so fascinated with nuclear chemistry that he stayed at the University of Rochester and got a Ph.D. in that field. For several years, he did research in the field under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. This research led to several grants and many publications. While doing research, Dr. Wile was also an assistant professor of chemistry.
Dr. Wile's love of science is demonstrated by the many awards he has won for excellence in teaching and research. He has also presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published more than 30 articles on these subjects in nationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journals, and has 9 books to his credit. You can find all of his books on this website.
Dr. Wile's teaching credits include The University of Rochester, Indiana University, Ball State University, and The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities, a high school for gifted and talented students. He currently spends his full-time efforts creating innovative science curriculum and speaking as a homeschool advocate throughout the US and other countries.

Zan Tyler
Zan Tyler's life as a speaker, writer, homeschooling mother and advocate was born over twenty years ago with a sense of God's calling and in the midst of great adversity. In 1984, Zan and Joe Tyler found themselves in a quandary when their local school board denied their initial application to homeschool. In a follow-up meeting, the South Carolina State Superintendent of Education threatened Zan with jail. The Tyler family spent the next eight years fighting for the rights of SC homeschoolers in the legislature, in the judicial system, and in the court of public opinion. Zan and Joe homeschooled each of their children from kindergarten through high school, for a total of twenty-one years.
As an acquisitions editor for Apologia, Zan's goal is to develop and publish biblically-based resources that will empower parents in the purpose and process of homeschooling. She says, In 1984, I read a book that gave me the courage and the vision to homeschool despite overwhelming obstacles. I know firsthand the power of the written word to equip us to pursue God's calling in our lives. My passion at Apologia is to bring the best possible authors and resources into the lives of homeschooling parents.
In addition to developing homeschooling resources, Zan derives deep joy from speaking to and encouraging homeschooling parents across the country and around the globe. After speaking at a conference in Japan, I spent time with a mother who said, 'You gave me strength because you gave me Christ.' My heart soared because my greatest desire is to give parents a sustainable vision for raising their children for Christ while providing them the very best education.
Zan is the author of Seven Tools for Cultivating Your Child's Potential. She is a popular on-line columnist, and her articles appear in a variety of publications including homeschooling magazines, the Court Report, and academic journals.
Zan founded the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools in 1990 and served as its president for 10 years. In 1987 she was honored as the South Carolina Homemaker of the Year. Additionally, she co-authored the book Anyone Can Homeschool with Dr Terry Dorian in 1996. In 1999 she appeared on NBC's Today Show with Katie Couric. The Governor of South Carolina awarded Zan the Order of the Palmetto in 1998, the highest honor a civilian can receive.
Zan has recently served as the National Grassroots Director for ParentalRights.org and as the Homeschool Editor and Resource Consultant for LifeWay.com's Web Network (www.lifeway.com/homeschool). For four years she worked with B&H Publishing Group as an acquisitions editor developing a homeschool line of books and resources.
Where are Zan and Joe Tyler's kids now? Ty, the oldest, is married to Tammy, and they are the parents of two beautiful girls. Ty is pursuing a successful sales career. John is married to Christine, and their first son was born in 2008. John is entering his last year of law school. Lizzy is a rising senior at Asbury College, where she is a media communications major. She recently had the opportunity to work at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. All three attended college on a variety of scholarships based on academics, athletics, leadership ability, community service, and/or the fine arts.
Most importantly to Zan and Joe is that they all continue to love each other and they are all seeking to serve and glorify Christ in their adult lives.

Deb Bell
Debra Bell is the best selling author of the award-winning Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling and the forthcoming Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling Teens. A former high school and college English teacher, Debra and her husband Kermit home educated their own four kids K-12. Three are college graduates, the fourth graduates shortly; one is married and one is in graduate school.
The daughter of two public school teachers, Debra holds a B.S. in communications education and a Masters in English. Currently, she is a doctoral candidate in educational psychology at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she holds an assistantship in the College of Education. Her research interest is identifying why, how and when homeschooling works; and she looks forward to using her training to better serve the homeschool community well into the future.
Debra was a reluctant convert to homeschooling in the early 80's. While finishing her graduate work for her permanent teaching certification, friends of hers (without degrees or teaching experience) started to homeschool and got better results than she did in the classroom. After recovering from the mind-blowing shock of this, she paddled her boat into their stream and opened up a recruitment office of her own.
During her homeschooling years, Debra helped to found and lead three homeschool co-ops which continue today (one for elementary, one for high school, and one for drama), and taught composition and literature courses for more than twenty years. Today she continues to teach Advanced Placement English courses online.
Debra and her husband are long time members of Sovereign Grace Ministries (www.sovereigngraceministries.org) which plants churches in the U.S. and abroad. And they are very grateful their four children have made the spread of the gospel through church-planting the central focus of their lives as well.
A popular convention speaker, known for her wit, candor and warmth, Debra is delighted to be asked to join the Apologia team and looks forward to locking arms with Dr. Jay, Davis, Rachael, and Zan in creating outstanding resources for the next generation of homeschoolers ( and she trusts, her own grandchildren).

Sally & Clay Clarkson

Sally and Clay were married in 1981. The Clarksons have four children-Sarah, Joel, Nathan and Joy-all educated at home from the beginning (the older three have graduated; Joy is still homeschooling). They currently live in Monument, Colorado, near Colorado Springs.
The Clarksons' mission in life is to encourage and equip Christian parents to build a biblical home and a godly heritage by nurturing, discipling, and educating their children at home. Together Sally and Clay produced their signature book Educating the WholeHearted Child, which will be updated and available from Apologia in 2009.
About their ministry, the Clarksons say, "It has been our privilege since 1994 to minister to families across the United States and overseas, speaking for conferences, churches, organizations and groups that share our heart for strengthening families to follow God wholeheartedly. All of our ministry messages and materials emphasize the authority and teaching of God's word, and the biblical priority of home and family."
Sally grew up in Texas and New Mexico. She graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where she majored in English and Speech. She became a Christian early in college, was actively involved in ministry, and joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ upon graduation in 1975. After discipling women on a large college campus, she spent three years living and ministering in Eastern Europe. Back in the states in 1980, Sally created and led ministries to executive women and single adults in Denver, Colorado.
Clay had been a friend and supporter of Sally's since 1975 when they joined Campus Crusade staff together. In 1980, Clay moved to Denver to attend Denver Seminary. Sally and Clay married a year later.
Sally remained active in ministry after their marriage and has been involved in several discipleship and teaching ministries to Christian and homeschooling mothers. Clay graduated from seminary in 1985 with an M.Div. (with honors) and served on the staff of the International Chapel of Vienna, Austria; worked with single adults and small groups in a large southern California church; and directed adult CE and led worship at a Bible church in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1993, he and Sally moved to family property near Fort Worth to begin Whole Heart Ministries.
Since that time Sally has written many books, including Seasons of a Mother's Heart. Since the late 1980s, Sally's speaking ministry has focused primarily on homeschooling, Christian parenting, and motherhood. Since 1995, Sally has presented the WholeHearted Child Home Education Workshop to thousands of families across the country. She has led annual WholeHearted Mother Conferences since 1998.
Discipleship is the heartbeat of Sally's life, whether it is in teaching and motivating other women, or in training and instructing her children. Through her books and speaking ministries, God has used Sally to bring encouragement and inspiration to mothers who desire to follow God's biblical design for their lives. All of her messages are filled with stimulating biblical instruction, touching personal anecdotes and illustrations, and wise spiritual insights born out of her own experience in life and ministry.
In addition to writing and speaking, Clay oversees and manages all aspects of the ministry. As a seasoned, seminary-trained Bible teacher, Clay's messages are characterized by sound biblical exposition, and the practical application of biblical truth to daily life. He has a heart for discipleship and training, and for communicating the many truths from God's word that strengthen parents, children, and families. Clay enjoys giving parents a clear biblical vision for their lives and for their children's lives, and then showing them practically and simply how to live out that vision day-to-day within their homes.

Larry Blythe
Larry was raised in a Christian home in California. He became a Christian around the age of 9, and later committed to seeking full time ministry. He studied Pastoral Theology at Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in Southern California where he received his B.A. in 1982. He pastored for about 15 years as an Associate Pastor/Student Ministries (Youth Pastor). During that time, he spoke at numerous youth rallies, camps and other junior high and high school events including teaching seminars for youth pastors with Word of Life Clubs and other student ministry organizations. After years of witnessing to Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and other people deceived by false religions and other aberrant groups, Larry developed a counter-cult ministry reaching many Jehovah's Witnesses for Christ. This led him to seeking out further education in the area of apologetics – defending the historical Judeo-Christian faith.
Larry earned his M.A.A. (Master of Arts in Apologetics) from Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, NC in 2002. He and his wife Jane accepted the call to assist Dr. Norman Geisler in starting Southern Evangelical Church, also located in Charlotte, in the spring of 2003 and served 3½ years as the Assistant Pastor of Christian Education.
Larry has been a regular guest speaker at the National Christian Apologetics Conference, and the Spiritual Counterfeits Conference. He was an instructor of World Religions and New Religious Movements, and Church History at Southern Evangelical Bible College. He was the Founder/Director of the Lay Institute for Biblical Studies and taught on various topics including cults, apologetics, theology, OT/NT, and social disciplines. He is one of the editors of the Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics.
He teaches seminars on a variety of topics at various venues. In addition to teaching subjects related to World Religions, Cults, and general apologetics (defending the historical Christian faith), Larry's seminar topics include I Don't Have Enough Faith to be An Atheist, Are the New Testament Accounts True, Do All Religions Lead to God, How To Answer a Skeptic, 10 Things Teens Can Do To Change The World, How to Refute Non-Christian Claims, and many more. For approximately 2½ years Larry was a regular guest on the weekly radio program The Voice of Truth. He has also been a guest on the local public access television show Giving An Answer speaking on various topics including Scientology, The DaVinci Code, and Jehovah's Witnesses. He has been a guest on radio programs both live and pre-recorded. Larry occasionally teaches classes in apologetics and World Religions in the prison ministry at Kershaw Correctional Institution, Kershaw, SC.
When he is not directing the new ApologiaAcademy, Larry enjoys racquetball, calling one of his three grown children, and dating his wife Jane. Larry and Jane, live in Charlotte, NC.

Sherri Seligson
Before Sherri Seligson was promoted to the position of "mother," she worked as a marine biologist at Walt Disney World's Living Seas pavilion in EPCOT Center, where she was involved in collecting and maintaining coral reef animals, especially focusing on fish nutrition and marine predator care. During this time she completed research on shark behavior and was the first individual representing Walt Disney World to have research published.
Besides authoring Apologia's Exploring Creation with Marine Biology text and curriculum, Sherri has written several articles for marine related magazines such as Tropical Fish Hobbyist and Aquarium Magazine as well as articles for home school publications.
Residing in Orlando, Florida, Sherri and her husband, David, have been homeschooling their four children for fifteen years. Two have graduated, earning full scholarships to college. Their oldest son is studying micro/molecular biology with the desire to work in pharmacology, and their second son is majoring in commercial music. As she has seen with her own children, Sherri realizes that even within the same family, every child's educational needs are different, and it's a new adventure tailoring their educational and career pathways. She is currently working on a new project which will aid home school students to receive high school credit while they complete an internship.
Sherri has a very motivated heart for teaching students the importance of studying God's creation and equipping them to give an answer for their faith, and she also speaks at conventions where she loves to encourage other moms on their homeschooling journey.

Sherrie Payne
Sherrie, the mother of six children, began homeschooling in 1983. There were many years when she taught not only her own children, but others as well. For two years, her classroom held eleven children ranging in age from preschool through high school. This experience gave her insight and perspective on teaching several grade levels at once.
Around the World in 180 Days is a curriculum she developed for her multi-grade home school. Using a form of the notebook approach method, this K-12 study will take the student through the geography, history, religion, and culture of all seven continents. As each continent is being studied, students will also study the current events going on in the area.
Sherrie's six children have now all graduated from their home school. As adults, her children now include a policeman, a lawyer in the Air Force JAG corps, a kindergarten teacher, a college senior at Anderson University and two stay-at-home moms who are already eagerly looking forward to becoming 'official' homeschooling families. So far, the grandchildren count is at seven grandchildren.

Diana Waring
Diana Waring, with her husband Bill, has been active in the homeschooling movement for the past twenty years, writing material for and speaking to homeschoolers across the U.S. and Canada, and more recently New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland, and Korea.
Much of what Diana teaches about homeschooling was learned "in the trenches" -- teaching her own three children from pre-school through high school. She dealt not only with the issue of very different types of learners in her one-home schoolhouse, but also with such practical considerations as getting laundry OFF the table and dinner ON the table while still teaching the kids.
In addition to her own real-life experiences, however, Diana has been mentored by extraordinary homeschool parents and by outstanding international educators, who have passed on to her the richness of their knowledge and experience in teaching. The combination of experience and mentoring, along with life-lessons taught lovingly by the Lord, have resulted in a compassionate, transparent, and nurturing writer and speaker whose trademark is humor.
Her books Beyond Survival and Reaping the Harvest, which are considered classics in the field, from Apologia Educational Ministry, have encouraged tens of thousands of families around the world toward successful homeschooling. Diana is also well-known for her engaging world history curriculum and rapid-fire audio recordings.
